How to redeem a gift card: every official method, and when selling for naira wins instead

To redeem a gift card is to hand its code back to the brand that issued it and turn the printed number into store credit — a balance in your account, a discount at checkout, or spending power on a card network. Every official redemption route is one of those three, and none of them needs a middleman. Below is each route, brand by brand — Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Steam, Xbox, Razer Gold, Netflix, the big US store cards, Vanilla Visa and Amex — followed by the harder question for a holder in Nigeria: what to do when the card in your hand is locked to a country you are not in. Already know you would rather sell? The rate calculator has this month's figure for every brand we buy.

What redeeming a gift card actually means

Redeeming means presenting the code to the issuer and collecting the value as credit — and the word has a legal shape, not just a shop counter one. US federal law defines a store gift card as a code "redeemable at a single merchant or an affiliated group of merchants" and a general-use prepaid card as one "redeemable at multiple, unaffiliated merchants" (15 U.S.C. § 1693l-1, via Cornell LII). Every brand in this guide sits in one of those two legal buckets: the single-merchant cards (Apple to Walmart) and the network cards (Vanilla Visa, Amex). One more property matters before you type anything: redemption is a one-way door. As Microsoft's own gift card page puts it, "Once redeemed to your U.S. Microsoft account, the full code value will be applied" — once a code lands on an account, it belongs to that account, with no route back to a sellable card.

Three checks before the code leaves the panel

  • Match the country first. A gift card is issued for one country's storefront, and redemption asks where your account lives — the single biggest reason a code refuses to go through. The full region picture is its own section below.
  • Type the address yourself. Redeem only inside the brand's own app or on a site you reached by typing the address — never through a link that arrived in a chat. A fake redemption portal collects codes the way a fake buyer does.
  • Know when "checking" is redeeming. Steam, Xbox, Google Play, Razer Gold and Netflix have no balance checker at all — entering the code anywhere spends it onto the account that typed it. The balance-check guide lists the official checker for every brand that has one.

Load the code into an account: Apple, Google Play, Amazon and the gaming wallets

The most common route turns the code into a balance tied to your sign-in. The steps differ per brand; the idea never does.

How to redeem an Apple gift card

On an iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile photo, choose Redeem Gift Card or Code, then scan the card with the camera or type the code. The value lands as your Apple Account balance — "You can redeem a gift card on your device to add funds to your Apple Account balance" (per Apple's redemption guide). What that balance can and cannot buy is mapped in our Apple card guide.

How to redeem a Google Play gift card

On the web, go to play.google.com/redeem and enter the code; in the Play Store app, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions, then Redeem. Either way Google shows the receiving account before anything moves — "Review the account that'll receive the balance you redeem" (per Google's redeem instructions) — so confirm you are signed into the right Google account first.

How to redeem an Amazon gift card

In the Amazon app or on amazon.com, open your account's gift card section, choose Redeem a Gift Card, and enter the claim code; the value becomes your account's gift card balance and applies itself to future orders. One caution for anyone still deciding whether to sell: applying the code to your own account is the redemption — there is no "just looking" at an Amazon code, as the balance-check guide's redeem-only list explains.

How to redeem a Steam card

On Steam, open your account details and choose Redeem a Wallet Code — the codes "work just like gift certificates, which can be redeemed on Steam for the purchase of games, software, and any other item you can purchase on Steam" (per Steam's redemption page). Steam is also the good news for Nigerian holders: US wallet codes redeem cleanly onto the US-dollar wallets Nigerian accounts run. The currency rule in full — including why euro and pound cards are the awkward ones — is in the Steam region guide.

How to redeem Xbox, Razer Gold and Netflix codes

Xbox codes redeem at redeem.microsoft.com or on the console, becoming Microsoft account balance "at Microsoft Store online, on Windows or Xbox" (per Microsoft's redeem guide). Razer Gold loads through the Reload flow on gold.razer.com — choose Razer Gold PIN and enter it; the full Razer Gold walkthrough covers the wallet and its region quirks. Netflix codes go in at netflix.com/redeem, and the gift balance simply pays the membership until it runs out — "Check the Payment History or Membership page to see if the gift card balance was applied" (per Netflix Help).

Apply it at checkout: the store cards

The big US store cards skip the account step: their value comes off the bill at the payment stage of checkout, online or at the till.

How to redeem Walmart, Target and Best Buy gift cards

At online checkout, choose gift card as a payment method and enter the card number and PIN; in store, hand the physical card or its barcode to the cashier. All three also let you save the card inside a store account so the balance applies automatically to later orders.

Nike, Sephora, Macy's, Nordstrom and Footlocker cards

Same flow on each brand's US site: payment step, gift card field, card number plus PIN. These five are also the cards most often gifted to Nigerians by relatives shopping in the US — worth knowing that the redemption side assumes a US checkout and a US delivery address, which is why so many of them end up sold instead.

How to redeem an eBay gift card

At eBay checkout, enter the card's redemption code in the gift card field and the value comes off the order total; once used, the code is tied to the eBay account that spent it. eBay codes are single-market affairs — a code bought for ebay.com belongs to ebay.com.

Swipe it like a bank card: Vanilla Visa and Amex

The network cards never redeem into an account at all — the card itself is the payment method. At a till you "present it to the merchant, select the credit payment option and sign the sale receipt", and for online or phone shopping the card must first be registered (per the Walmart Visa gift card terms, whose mechanics mirror the whole category). Vanilla Visa and Amex gift cards work the same way under their own cardholder agreements: swipe, sign or register, spend — anywhere in the US that takes the network. Nowhere else, which brings us to the wall.

Why a US gift card refuses to redeem in Nigeria

Because nearly every route above checks where your account lives, and most Nigerian holders' accounts say Nigeria. The brands state it in their own words:

  • Apple: US-purchased cards "can only be linked to an Account in the United States" (per Apple's gift card terms).
  • Google Play: "Your Google Play balance is linked to your Google Play country", and after setting a Play country you wait at least 90 days before you can change it (per Google's country rules).
  • Microsoft / Xbox: gift cards "are in local currency, so when you buy a gift card it will only work in the country where it was purchased" (per Microsoft's store listing).
  • Netflix: its cards are not sold in Nigeria at all, and a foreign card works only "as long as you pay for Netflix in the same currency as the gift card" (per Netflix Help).
  • Amazon: the same idea, one marketplace at a time — an amazon.com card belongs to amazon.com.
  • Vanilla Visa / Amex: both cardholder agreements limit spending to the United States, the same rule the Walmart Visa terms quoted above spell out for the category.

Put those rules together and the pattern is ours to state plainly: the card is rarely the problem — the pairing of the card's country and your account's country is. Steam stands as the one wide door (a US wallet code converts onto a Nigerian USD wallet), and a US store card can still serve a holder who genuinely shops US sites. Everyone else is holding value they cannot reach directly.

When the smarter redemption is naira

If the region wall stands between you and the balance, the card's value still has a second door: sell it for naira and use that money anywhere. No brand redeems to naira — converting a card means selling it to a buyer, and the price follows the brand, the form and the size. At current board prices, a $100 Apple card pays ₦122,500 as sealed plastic and ₦104,000 as a code, a $100 Amazon card pays ₦53,000 and ₦19,000 on the same two forms, and a $100 Google Play card pays ₦98,000. The brand-less amount guide ladders every size from $25 up, the brand rate pages carry the full tables, and the board behind all of it was last refreshed on Aug 13, 2026 — our rates move monthly, not daily.

Redeem the value even when you can't redeem the card

A card that refuses your account is not dead money — it is most of its face value, one message away. Tell us the brand, the amount and the form on WhatsApp, and the reply is a specific naira figure in writing before the code is shown to anyone. Once the card verifies, the bank transfer follows within minutes.

Whichever door you take, the order of operations stays the same: check the card's country against your account's, keep the scratch panel closed until the value is agreed, and let the card do the one thing it does best for you — spend, or convert. The rate calculator is the neutral first step for the second of those.

Questions, answered

How do I redeem a gift card online?

Scratch the panel, open the brand’s own app or type its official address yourself, sign in, and enter the code on its redeem page (Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Steam, Xbox, Razer Gold, Netflix) or in the gift-card field at checkout (the store cards and eBay). Vanilla Visa and Amex skip redemption entirely — register the card and spend it like a bank card. Whatever the route, confirm the balance landed before closing the page.

Can I redeem a US gift card in Nigeria?

Only into an account set to the card’s own country: a US Apple, Google Play, Microsoft, Amazon or Netflix card will not load onto a Nigerian account, and US store cards assume a US checkout. Steam is the standing exception — a US wallet code redeems onto the US-dollar wallet a Nigerian account runs. Everything else converts best through a sale for naira.

How do I redeem a gift card to naira?

No brand redeems to naira directly — the route is selling the card to a buyer. The price follows the brand, the form and the size: the worked examples in this guide price $100 Apple, Amazon and Google Play cards off the current board, and the rate calculator turns any brand and amount into its current figure.

Can I check a gift card balance before redeeming it?

Most store cards and network cards have a safe checker, but Steam, Xbox, Google Play, Razer Gold and Netflix do not — on those five, entering the code anywhere redeems it onto the account that typed it. Our balance-check guide lists the official checker for every brand we buy and flags the fake-checker scam.

Should I redeem the card first and then sell the balance?

No — never. Redemption locks the value to the account that typed the code, and no buyer can pull a balance back out of an account. A card sells with its code untouched and its panel unscratched: the buyer prices the code itself, verifies it, and only then does anyone redeem. Redeem first and you have nothing left to sell.
