YouTube Premium in Nigeria: what each plan costs in 2026, and how to actually pay

YouTube Premium in Nigeria costs ₦1,700 a month for one person, ₦2,800 for a whole household, and ₦1,300 if music is all you want. YouTube set those figures with its April 2025 increase, and they hold as of September 1, 2026. Picking between the plans is the easy part — it comes down to how many of you are watching. Paying from Nigeria is where most guides go quiet. This page does both.

The three YouTube Premium plans in Nigeria

Three plans sell here: Individual at ₦1,700, Family at ₦2,800 and YouTube Music Premium at ₦1,300 a month — plus a student tier whose price only appears inside the signup flow. What all of them share is the core package: no advertising — YouTube's own benefits page says you watch "without interruptions by ads"— plus offline downloads, audio that keeps playing with the screen off, and, on full Premium, the music app thrown in. If you have never had Premium before, the paid-service terms allow one trial per payment method for first-time subscribers, with the first charge landing automatically when the trial ends — the signup page shows the current trial length.

Watching alone? Individual — ₦1,700 a month

The full package on every device you own: no ads on anything, background play, downloads, and the music app included. At the official exchange rate of ₦1,332.94/$1 published by the Central Bank side of the market on September 1 (NgnRates), ₦1,700 works out at roughly $1.28 — cheap by global standards, but it lands on a card that has to be allowed to pay it.

A full household? Family — ₦2,800 a month

One person pays, the household watches. YouTube's terms describe it as a "six person plan" for family group members "residing in the same household as the family manager" — the manager plus up to five more, everyone on their own Google account with their own recommendations. The household rule is not a formality; the next section has the math and the enforcement.

At university? Student — the figure shows at signup

Students at higher-education institutions get a discounted plan, but the paperwork is real: you must "be verified as a student by SheerID", re-verify every year, and the discount runs for up to four consecutive years. One honest gap: YouTube does not publish the Nigerian student price on any public page we can verify — the exact naira figure appears inside the signup flow once SheerID confirms you. Check there before budgeting around it.

Here for the music only? YouTube Music Premium — ₦1,300 a month

The music-only tier strips ads inside the YouTube Music app, with background play and downloads there — while ordinary YouTube videos keep their advertising. A music-family version exists at ₦2,000. If YouTube is effectively your radio, ₦1,300 does the job; if you watch anything beyond music, the ₦400 step up to full Premium is the better buy.

What about Premium Lite? The cheaper tier is not sold in Nigeria. YouTube launched it in March 2025 as "a new, more affordable way to enjoy most videos on YouTube ad-free", and added downloads and background play to it in February 2026 (TechCrunch). But coverage of its 63-country footprint (PPC Land) names no Nigerian availability, so the three plans above are the whole menu here today.

The family math: when sharing beats paying alone

Two individual plans cost ₦3,400 a month; one family plan costs ₦2,800. The crossover is two people — from a pair upward, the family plan is cheaper, and at the full six members it works out near ₦467 a head. Nobody sharing your roof means the individual plan wins outright.

Stretch the household rule and it eventually snaps. Since September 2025 YouTube has been checking that members actually live at the family manager's address: flagged accounts receive an email warning that the membership "will be paused in 14 days", and paused members fall back to watching with ads. Family for the people under your roof — not a WhatsApp group of strangers splitting ₦467.

The April 2025 hike, and why 2026 has skipped Nigeria

The last increase here landed in April 2025, and neither of the 2026 rounds includes Nigeria. The details: before the increase, the individual plan cost ₦1,100 a month in Nigeria. That month, subscribers were emailed the new figures — ₦1,700 individual (up 54%) and ₦2,800 family (up 64%), per Telecompaper — with the changes landing on each subscriber's next billing date. Music Premium moved from ₦900 to ₦1,300 and its family plan from ₦1,400 to ₦2,000 in the same round, as Legit.ng reported. Those are still the prices seventeen months later.

The increases elsewhere have kept coming. American subscribers were raised earlier in 2026, and another wave reaches parts of Europe and Singapore with billing dates on or after September 23, 2026 (9to5Google) — Nigeria appears in neither round. Whether it does is YouTube's call, not something any outside page can promise.

How to pay for YouTube Premium in Nigeria

The straightforward route is the naira debit card already in your wallet. It took until July 2025 for Nigeria's banks to switch international online card payments back on — the suspension had run more than three years (CNBC Africa). The caps have loosened steadily since: GTBank lifted its naira card to $20,000 a quarter this June, UBA switched its premium naira cards on for international spending, and First Bank advertises $500 every month (ThisDay). A ₦1,700 subscription sits comfortably inside even the tightest of those. If a payment does fail, the cause is usually mundane — the card was never enabled for online international use, a one-toggle fix in the bank's app, or the monthly ceiling is already spent.

The second route runs through Google Play. Subscribe inside the YouTube Android app and the charge goes through Google Play billing — the same wallet that holds Play credit. One honest caveat: no public Google page spells out the balance-to-Premium path for Nigeria in a single sentence, so treat the payment screen inside your own app as the final word. And the funding reality matters — no official Google page lists Nigeria among the countries where Play cards are sold, which is our reading of Google's availability pages and matches what the market shows: Play credit here mostly arrives on cards bought from third parties.

If someone sends you a Google Play gift card

This is where many Nigerians actually meet this topic: one arrives as a birthday gift from family overseas, or a friend settles a debt with it. The wall to know about is the country lock. Google's own country-change page warns that "you can't use the Google Play balance from your old country or region in your new country or region" , and the US gift-card terms restrict the cards to "residents of the USA" spending on "eligible items on Google Play only". A dollar Play card and a Nigerian Play account simply do not combine — the code will not redeem.

One safety note before anything else: Google Play sits on the short list of brands where no balance checker exists — typing the code into an official page redeems it for good. And what it can become is naira. Sell the card, and the proceeds pay for Premium the ordinary way — on the board as of Aug 13, 2026, a $100 Google Play card pays ₦98,000, which carries the individual plan for the better part of five years at today's price. If we had to pick: living alone, the ₦1,700 individual plan is the honest choice. Two or more under one roof, the family plan is cheaper from the second person. Music only, ₦1,300 does it. Pay with the naira card you already have — and if a dollar Play card reaches you from abroad instead, it cannot subscribe you here, but its naira value can cover the plan for years.
