How to sell a Sephora gift card in Nigeria: what a $100 card pays, the e-gift crossover under $100, and the safe sale

Sep 17, 20267 min read

A young Nigerian woman with braided hair at a wooden desk at night in warm lamplight, chin on hand, studying a blank white gift card lying flat beside a small cream cosmetics pouch and a plain lipstick, her phone face-up with a soft unreadable glow

A $100 US Sephora gift card in Nigeria sells for ₦106,000 sealed in plastic and ₦85,000 as an e-gift code on the current board — and below $100 the usual rule flips, because on this brand the emailed code is the one that pays more. This guide prices both forms, reads the fine print on the card's own back, and runs the sale in the order that keeps your digits yours until a written figure exists.

The $100 answer, and the under-$100 crossover

The board prices Sephora three ways. Sealed plastic from $10 to $99 earns ₦750 per dollar; from $100 to $500 it earns ₦1,060. The e-gift line — the code that arrives by email — runs flat at ₦850 per dollar. Every size, same number. Read those three figures slowly and something rare shows: under $100, the emailed code out-earns the plastic.

The arithmetic, at two sizes. A $50 e-gift pays ₦42,500; the same $50 on plastic pays ₦37,500₦5,000 less for the version that sat in a shop rack. At $100 the plastic jumps ahead and stays there: ₦106,000 against ₦85,000, a gap of about 20%. Sephora is the only card on our board whose lines cross like this — on Amazon, Macy's and Apple the e-code pays the same or less at every size (our rate ranking maps those gaps). Why the market sets Sephora's small plastic so low, it doesn't say. The rule you can bank: under $100, quote the e-gift line; at $100 and up, quote the plastic.

Sephora credit stays easy to move because the following behind it is enormous — more than 40 million Beauty Insider members by early 2025, per Glossy's reporting. The Sephora rate table sets out every tier, both forms included, and the Sephora calculator prices your exact card — plastic or e-gift — in one tap.

The card's map: US and Canada, never Nigeria

No till in Nigeria takes this card, because the card's own terms fence it to two countries. The terms printed on the card (listed verbatim in Coinstar's gift-card terms library) read: "Redeemable for merchandise sold at Sephora locations in the US & Canada or sephora.com." Sephora's terms page adds that cards bought in the US or Canada can't be used in other international locations or on international websites. Sephora's pages refuse automated reading, so we describe that page in our words and link it for you to read firsthand.

The wall here is double. Sephora runs no store in Nigeria — Wikipedia's running tally counts over 2,300 stores across 33 countries, none of them in Africa — and Sephora's own international-websites page says the US site no longer ships internationally. Store credit you can't reach is still money; it just needs changing hands. That is the whole reason a resale market for this card exists in Lagos, Abuja and everywhere in between.

Two footnotes widen the map slightly. The card also spends at Sephora at Kohl's — the beauty shop-in-shop inside Kohl's department stores — per Reviewed.com's FAQ on the partnership: "you can use a Sephora gift card for Sephora-related purchases inside Kohl's." The terms add the limit: the card doesn't work on kohls.com itself, and the reverse direction fails too — Kohl's own gift card can't be used at a stand-alone Sephora, per the same FAQ. Some older guides still get both directions wrong. Canada works too: a US card redeems in Canadian Sephora stores, its value converted at the day's exchange rate. None of it reaches Nigeria. For a holder here, the card's value lives in its sale.

The fine print on the back of the card

The card outlives most of the panic around it. Its printed terms say it in two words: "Does not expire." No fees eat the balance either — the Canadian printing, on CAA's partner listing, adds "no purchase or use fees apply." The issuer named on the back is "LGCS Inc., a Florida corporation, which is the sole legal obligor to the cardholder" — Sephora's own gift-card company. Two harder lines follow: "Not redeemable for cash except as required by law" — Sephora itself never pays you out — and "The value of this card will not be replaced if the card is lost, stolen, altered or destroyed." Which is why the back also says: "Protect as you would cash."

One clause deserves a straight look. The terms carry a no-resale section: cards may not be resold without the issuer's written authorization, and a card obtained from an unauthorized reseller — the text names internet auction sites by name — is not valid and will not be honored. The Canadian terms compress the same rule to two words: "Resale is prohibited." We won't pretend that sentence away. This market exists in spite of it — and because there is no official buyback, the buyer's own process is all the protection a seller gets: a written figure up front, the balance verified live, the payout promised in the same chat. If the card itself is a gift still being planned, tell the giver to buy it at Sephora or a big-chain rack, never from an auction listing.

See the balance before you sell

Sephora keeps a public balance page for cardholders: the 16-digit card number and the PIN from under the scratch panel (or from the delivery email) return the current balance on the spot. Read it yourself first: knowing your own figure turns every later quote into something you can judge. Our balance-check directory keeps the official link for Sephora and the other 21 brands.

One oddity worth knowing: three official phone lines circulate for balance inquiries. The card's own back prints "Balance inquiries call 1.877.SEPHORA"; Sephora's Canadian partner CAA prints 1-888-860-7897; and Sephora's corporate gift-card FAQ prints a third (1-800-860-7897). The website check needs no call at all — but if you ever do phone, take the number off your own card's back, never off a chat message.

And a caution that applies to the page, not just the phone: the two numbers that read the balance are the two numbers that spend the card. Checking your own card is between you and Sephora. Typing those same digits into a stranger's chat "for a quick check" is handing over the money — the next section shows where that road ends.

The WhatsApp chat, start to finish

A Sephora sale runs in one conversation, in an order that never changes: the written naira figure first, the card's digits only after you accept, the transfer once the balance confirms. Here is how that reads in practice.

Open with the size and the form — and on this brand the form is worth stating twice, because the two forms quote different lines, and at the smaller sizes the code out-quotes the card. Plastic travels as front-and-back photos with the panel intact. An e-gift goes as the code text, the delivery email kept beside it as your proof of where the code came from. The desk then reads the balance while you watch, and the naira lands in the Nigerian bank account you named — GTBank, Access, Kuda, Opay, Zenith, UBA, whichever carries your name. Once the balance confirms, the transfer is the next message in the chat — minutes later, on a normal day.

If the counter is new to you, start small. A $25 e-gift travels the identical route, and watching one modest trade close cleanly teaches you the process better than any promise can.

Price both forms before you sell

The calculator quotes plastic and e-gift separately, and on Sephora the smaller card can surprise you. One message — the brand, the size, the form — brings back the written figure for your exact card; the code shows itself only after that figure wins you over.

The $0 card at the till, and the scripts behind it

Sephora cards carry a documented draining problem, and it is worth two minutes of your attention. In February 2025, NBC 5 Responds told the story of an Illinois grandmother whose $100 Christmas card read "0 balance" when her 11-year-old granddaughter tried to spend it — and found "dozens of similar gift card complaints posted on Sephora's website, TikTok and various Reddit forums dating back at least a year." Sephora told NBC it takes combatting gift card fraud "very seriously" and, after weeks of the station's questions, "issued her a $150 e-gift card for her troubles." The same report cites the FTC's count: gift-card fraud cost Americans more than $217 million in 2023, with gift cards named in about a quarter of all fraud complaints.

How do cards arrive empty? The expert NBC quoted — Ray Clopton, whose company runs gift-card programs for more than 6,000 small businesses — described one attack plainly: bots hammer a merchant's "Check Your Balance" page with "thousands of balance inquiries until I hit on a valid number," then redeem what they find. That is the mechanism behind two things you already read above: why a buyer verifies the balance live before paying, and why an emailed code — readable by anyone who ever saw that inbox — quotes below sealed plastic at $100 and up.

The scripts that hunt sellers here wear Sephora wrapping over the usual bones. A stranger must "confirm the balance" before he can quote — he is asking for the spendable digits. A payment screenshot arrives before the money does — check your own bank app, never his phone. And a marketplace lists a $100 card for $60 — remember the clause: cards from unauthorized resellers may not be honored at all. Our scam checklist maps every pattern named here, and what to do if one of them already caught you.

A beauty card with no beauty counter in reach is still money — money whose rules you can now read for yourself. Price both forms, check the balance on Sephora's own page, and never let the digits outrun the writing.

Questions, answered

How much is a $100 Sephora gift card in naira?

Two figures, because the form sets the line: a sealed $100 US card pays ₦106,000 (₦1,060 per dollar on the $100–$500 tier), while the same $100 as an e-gift code pays ₦85,000 at the flat ₦850-per-dollar line. Under $100 the ordering reverses — the e-gift line sits above the small-plastic one. The Sephora calculator quotes any amount in either form.

Where can I sell my Sephora gift card in Nigeria?

This counter buys Sephora cards daily, all inside a single WhatsApp conversation: say what you hold (brand, size, plastic or e-gift), and a written figure lands in reply while the digits stay on the card. Weighing us against another desk? Read our vendor-vetting guide first and hold any buyer to it.

How do I check my Sephora gift card balance before selling?

Sephora’s own balance page handles it: the card’s 16-digit number and its PIN (scratch panel for plastic, delivery email for an e-gift) show the current balance. A phone route exists too, but three different official numbers circulate — take yours off the card’s own back. Never let a buyer “check” it for you: the digits that show the balance also spend it. The link lives in our balance-check directory.

Do Sephora e-gift cards sell for less than plastic?

Not under $100 — and that makes Sephora the odd one out on this board. The e-gift line runs flat at ₦850 per dollar at every size, while small plastic ($10–$99) earns ₦750 — so a $50 e-gift pays ₦42,500 against ₦37,500 for the card. From $100 up, the plastic line jumps ahead and the e-gift quotes about 20% lower.

Can I use a Sephora gift card in Nigeria?

No — the card redeems only in Sephora’s US and Canadian stores and on sephora.com, and its terms bar use anywhere else or on international sites. With no Sephora store here and no international shipping from the US site, what the card is worth here is exactly what it sells for.

Do Sephora gift cards expire?

No. The card’s own back says “Does not expire,” and no fees touch the balance. US federal law sets a five-year floor for gift cards, and Sephora’s terms clear it outright. The full map of what expires and what never does is our expiry guide.
