The rule exists because the alternative is documented. In July 2023, someone registered nordstromgiftcardbalance.com and put up a page in Nordstrom's name; its "check balance" button opened a Google Form asking for the visitor's "Gift Card number" and "Access number or code" — the same two labels the real page asks for, word for word. Nordstrom took the domain to the World Intellectual Property Organization, whose panel treated the setup as phishing of users' access data and ordered the domain transferred to the company on March 7, 2025 — and the decision cites two earlier UDRP wins by the same brand. The fake page's whole trick was the form itself — the same two labels, word for word, on a domain that was never the brand's. That is why the safety lives in the address bar and nowhere else.
On the plastic card, the access number hides under a scratch-off panel — the field that completes the pair. A panel still sealed is proof nobody has read it. Keep it that way until you sell, and know your balance before the sale starts.
The written figure, then the card
Say the brand, the size and the form — sealed plastic, or the digital card that arrived by email — and the reply lands with the exact naira amount written down. Back in her car, she scratched the backs of the cards and read the numbers to the caller — and "only 30 minutes had elapsed since she purchased the gift cards at Rite Aid, but they'd already been spent."
