One $100 card beats two $50s
A $100 eBay gift card pays ₦70,000 on the current board — ₦700 for every dollar — and on this brand the per-dollar rate climbs with size: ₦550 from $10 to $49, ₦650 from $50 to $99, ₦700 from $100 to $500. That last step is real money. Two $50 cards pay ₦32,500 apiece, ₦65,000 together; one $100 card pays ₦70,000 — a ₦5,000 gap on the same hundred dollars. Form moves nothing here. An eBay card is its redemption code — plastic from a shop rack carries it, an email delivers it — and the board prices both off the same tiers, because what the buyer verifies is the code either way. The card eBay stopped selling
The retirement is official and dated. eBay's own help page says it plainly: "Starting on August 3rd, 2026, availability of digital and physical eBay gift cards will gradually phase out." The page that sold them is already gone — eBay's gift-card storefront returns a dead link as of September 2026 — and shop racks run down what is left: the same page notes cards may stay at CVS, Walgreens and other retailers "for a limited time," each stopping "depending on its remaining inventory."
What the retirement does not touch is your card. "Existing gift cards can still be used at any time," the page continues, and only eBay-issued cards are being discontinued — third-party brands were never spendable on eBay anyway, as a puzzled holder learned from a community mentor when the news broke. Refunds still return to the gift-card balance "as usual." Why eBay walked away it has not said; one veteran industry columnist guesses, on his own admission, that resale fraud — buyers who redeem a card, then swear it arrived empty — finally outgrew the program. Whatever the reason, the arithmetic for a holder in Nigeria is simple: the card's terms stand, its redemption still runs, and what ended is the supply.
The terms survived the retirement
Every rule the card was issued under still runs. The official FAQ promises: "Your eBay gift card does not expire and there are no fees." The terms — a contract with eBay Gift Card Services, Inc., the issuing subsidiary — bar redemption "outside the U.S. or its Territories," and the FAQ adds the mechanics: an eBay account registered in the U.S., a U.S. shipping address, and checkout on eBay.com only. Spending caps sit at $1,000 a day and $1,500 a calendar month, counted across every account linked to one user.
Two of those rules decide what a holder in Nigeria can do. The first is the address wall. eBay will happily ship a parcel to Nigeria — its international shipping table lists the country by name — but no Nigerian address can spend the card. The parcel travels; the balance doesn't.
The second is the lock. eBay runs no balance checker: its balance page demands a sign-in, and the only way to see what a card holds is to add the card to an account — "Gift cards are linked to your account on the first use" (the help page), "non-transferable after the Gift Card has been used once" (the terms). A mentor on eBay's own community forum states the consequence in two sentences: "eBay does not have a gift card checker… After a gift card is added to your account, it can't be removed." Can you sell the card on eBay itself?
Not unless eBay knows you. Its gift-card listing policy allows "eBay gift cards that are sold by authorized sellers" — everyone else is barred from listing this card at all. Other brands' cards may be listed only up to $500 in total live face value, electronically delivered cards from high-risk sellers are banned outright, and enforcement runs from listing removal to account suspension.
Even the seller account is a wall from here. Sellers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia need a bank account in their country of residence; everyone else falls into an "Additional Countries" catch-all in eBay's payments terms, paid in US dollars, sometimes through a required third-party institution. The institution in practice is Payoneer, whose own eBay page names onboarding guides for Japan, the UAE and Pakistan — Nigeria appears on neither page. Run the sale like an auction
Every sale of this card is an auction; the only question is whether you hold the gavel.
Your reserve comes first — the naira figure you will not sell under. That written figure is the reserve: no serious bidding starts below it.
Then the bids. Your opening message says what you hold — brand, face value, plastic or emailed — and no digit from the card. A real bid is a number with a name and a process behind it, and it arrives before your code does. Anything that asks for the digits first never meant to bid at all.
The gavel is your yes. The code leaves your hand only when the gavel falls — after you have accepted the written figure. From there the desk verifies the balance live, and settlement lands in your own account: GTBank, Access, Kuda, Opay, Zenith, UBA, whichever bank carries your name. From your yes, the alert usually arrives inside the time it takes to boil a kettle.

The scripts hunting this card all chase the same thing: your code, spent, before any money you can keep arrives.
"I can check it on eBay's official page for you — send the code." That offer carries a tell you now know: eBay itself runs no checker, and every route to a balance locks the card to the account that touches it. A stranger offering to check your card is claiming it — whether the ask arrives as a helpful message or a link to a fake "balance page."
The un-paying buyer works the other end of the trade: payment first, codes second, then the payment cancelled. The National Consumers League's Fraud.org warns that open marketplaces "lack the protections needed to verify that a buyer will not back out on their payment," and the card is spent before you know. The defense is the auction's own order — a reserve in writing, the code only when the gavel falls, settlement your own bank confirms.
The boldest script never bids for your card at all — it drafts you into someone else's purchase. eBay's own scam page says "We often see this happen in car sales" and gives the rule in one line: "Never use eBay gift cards as a payment method anywhere except eBay.com." The same page tells you to "treat your eBay gift card redemption code like cash" and, if you are targeted, to report with the code's first nine digits. The US Federal Trade Commission's 2020 data spotlight named eBay "the gift card of choice for scammers" — the brand reported most often that year, inside nearly $245 million in gift-card losses reported from January 2018 to September 2020 — and its 2021 follow-up still ranked eBay fourth, behind Target, Google Play and Apple.
